Position: Business Manager and Development Officer
Reports to: Executive Director

Status: Hourly, 0.75 FTE
Location: Organization is based in San Jose, CA.

The Organization
San Jose Taiko (SJT) is a 44-year old nonprofit organization dedicated to advancing the taiko – Japanese drumming – art form and connecting people through cultural understanding, creative expression, and rhythmic heartbeat. SJT is based on the core values of Empowerment, Accessibility, Respect, Community Building, Gratitude, and Joy.

SJT is and will continue to be the premiere taiko ensemble outside of Japan. SJT has transformed the artform by including other world music instruments/rhythms and are constantly pushing the boundaries with its innovative music and productions. SJT is a leader within the taiko field, cultivating its exponential growth outside of Japan. Our existing outreach and training programs, available to the general public and taiko practitioners, are the foundation of the Taiko Conservatory. Through the Taiko Conservatory, SJT is committed to providing professional development opportunities, technical assistance, and a comprehensive array of support and information about contemporary Taiko to individuals and organizations around the world.

The Opportunity
The Business Manager and Development Officer will work closely with Board, Executive Director and Program Staff in shaping the scope and operational capacity of SJT as it enters an exciting period of expansion and growth.

· Articulate the vision of the SJT that is based on the organization’s mission, core values and guiding principles
· Embody SJT’s existing organizational culture
· Communicate effectively with SJT Board members, staff, performers, audience, and students
· Plan, direct, or coordinate supportive services in alignment with SJT’s strategic plan and initiatives, and when necessary recommend timelines and resources needed to reach those goals
· Oversee operations, including accounting, financial planning, technology, communications, and public affairs, human resource management, technical and professional support, and legal
· Support Executive Director in sustaining and expanding SJT’s diverse and sustainable funding base including earned income and contributed income streams
· Direct implementation of fundraising strategies, including researching funding sources, cultivating funders, submitting grant proposals, and managing records and documentation
· Stewardship of major gifts and individual donor processes and policies, including acknowledgment and follow-up
· Actively represent the SJT to funders, donors, strategic partners, and general public
· Develop relationships with strategic government, non-profit, corporate partners, and taiko community leaders

1.     EDUCATION: Bachelors required. Business Administration or similar focus preferred.

2.     EXPERIENCE: Minimum 5 years experience in similar position.
a.     Non-profit management     b.     Budget planning and management     c.     Fundraising experience and success including private philanthropy, corporate donations and government grants, including grant writing, grant reporting, donor stewardship

3.     COMMUNICATION SKILLS: Ability to read, analyze, and interpret the most complex documents; respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints; write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals; write speeches and articles using original or innovative techniques or style; communicate effectively in both written and oral form; and, effectively present controversial or complex topics to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.

4.     REASONING ABILITY: Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions; exhibit independent judgment in the development, implementation and evaluation of plans, procedures, and policies; develop strategic and adaptable solutions.

5.     OTHER KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES: Commitment to SJT’s core values and guiding principles. Ability to build consensus and align various stakeholders to accomplish shared goal; facilitate conflict resolution; and, work flexible hours as weeknights and weekends will occasionally be required. Excellent organizational development, administrative and personnel management skills. Knowledge or experience with the performing arts required. Knowledge or experience with taiko preferred.

6.     SOFTWARE SKILLS: Intermediate level familiarity with Microsoft Office and Googledocs required. Familiarity with DropBox, SalesForce, and QuickBooks preferred.

· Hourly rate commensurate with experience
