Taiko Weekend Intensive

Taiko Weekend Intensive (TWI) 2013

Are you a taiko player with at least two years of experience seeking advanced instruction? Join fellow taiko enthusiasts from around the world at our annual Taiko Weekend Intensive (TWI) workshop series, led by SJT Artistic Staff and designed to enhance your abilities as a performer and member of the taiko community. Past participants have come across the US and from such far-away places as Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver, and England.

This year, we are offering two different workshops:

TAIKOPEACE - Unleashing Your Creative Spirit: April 9 - 11 (Tues - Thurs)

Join SJT's Artistic Director Emeritus and NEA National Heritage Fellow, PJ Hirabayashi, for workshop intended to unleash your personal creativity and inspire you to approach and play taiko in uplifting new ways. PJ will take you through various explorations of expression in taiko, dance, movement, voice, and writing. The class will be co-instructed by butoh dance choreographer and community artist, Judith Kajiwara. The TaikoPeace workshop is geared towards taiko enthusiasts, taiko educators, and both recreational and performing taiko players. Fee: $400.

KATSUGI OKEDO BOOTCAMP: April 12 - 14 (Fri - Sun)

Explore the fundamentals of SJT katsugi okedo style. Learn challenging drills to improve your technique and discover ways to use movement effectively and ergonomically. Previous katsugi okedo experience is not necessary, but priority will be given to players whose groups own and use katsugi okedo. Fee: $400.
