Celebrate San Jose Taiko's 45th Anniversary Season

Bridging our trailblazing past and our vibrant present as we strive towards our ultimate potential as a performing company.

February 18, 5:30-7:30PM: Witness the San Jose debut of two works created with Aswat Ensemble at the Day of Remembrance (DOR) in San Jose Japantown. These works relate the experiences of Japanese-Americans during WWII and Muslim-Americans post 9/11, leveraging the power of music to illustrate the supportive connection between these two communities.

DOR commemorates the issuing of Executive Order 9066 which led to the incarceration of Japanese Americans during WWII. Organized by the San Jose Nihonmachi Outreach Committee, the full program features community speakers, a candlelight procession through Japantown, and the 7:00pm performance by San Jose Taiko and Aswat Ensemble. The Day of Remembrance brings different communities together in order to build trust, respect and understanding among all people and to renew our pledge to fight for equality, justice and peace.

This debut made possible in part thanks to the support of the New Generation Nikkei Fund.

May 12th, 5:30PM-9:30PM: Be part of the story at Japantown Immersive, a festive open street event reinventing the way audiences experience art, directed in collaboration with Epic Immersive. Interactive, meaningful moments include the chance to dance to a condensed version of Swingposium (taiko and swing music), learn Hanafuda (a classic Japanese card game), get up close and personal with Japantown artists, and witness the newest iteration of SJT's collaboration with DJ Cutso of The Bangerz and the electric choreography of Japantown's The Get Down. This event has been created and produced by San Jose Taiko to celebrate the rich cultural history and exciting present of our unique community through the lens of SJT, contributing to the continued vitality and sustainability of San Jose Japantown, one of only 3 remaining Japantowns in the US.

This event is free to the public thanks in part to the generous support of the John S. and James L Knight Foundation and California Arts Council Creative California Communities. Stay tuned for more details on this special Japantown experience!

June 1st, 6:00-9:00PM: Celebrate with us as we pull out all the stops for our Benefit Dinner at Villa Ragusa in Campbell, CA. Highlighting the most memorable moments in SJT's legacy and sharing our vision for the future, the Dinner provides you with a chance to transform thousands of people by making it possible for them to experience SJT's artistry and programming.

April - October: Sample all aspects of Japanese American culture and community, including taiko, at the many festivals held throughout the year. Starting at the end of April and running through October, it wouldn't be a season of taiko without these gatherings to celebrate our Japanese American community.

September 21-22: Attend the culmination of our 45th Anniversary celebration!  Our 45th Anniversary Concert at the School of Arts and Culture at the Mexican Heritage Plaza will feature collaborations with special guest artists Aswat Ensemble and Wesley Jazz Ensemble, highlighting events and music developed for our 45th Anniversary as well as a medley of San Jose Taiko songs from the past 45 years.  Tickets go on sale from this website on March 1st.
