Norman Yoshio Mineta was born in San Jose, California, in 1931 of immigrant parents from Japan. He became one of the most prominent citizens of San Jose. The airport in San Jose was named after him.
Mineta was a member of the Democratic Party. He served as Cabinet Secretaries under President Bill Clinton and also President George W. Bush. He was serving as Secretary of Transportation at the time of 9/11.
Mineta was the Mayor of San Jose from 1971 until 1975. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from California and served from 1975 until 1995. He was in private business for some years. He died on May 3, 2022, in Maryland, at the age of 90.
