SJSU - Day of Remembrance

  • Diaz Compean Student Union Theater One Washington Sq San Jose, CA 95192 (map)

Recognizing Day of Remembrance, the anniversary of the national order to incarcerate Japanese-Americans on the West Coast after the Pearl Harbor attack, the Hammer Theatre will host four sessions engaging with the anniversary through the arts.

The opening session will feature the Spartan Film, Nisei, about two brothers who enroll in the Army while their disapproving father is incarcerated, followed by a panel discussing the making and impact of the film.

The second session will kick off the event with San Jose Taiko, followed by city and university dignitaries discussing the importance of the day.

The third session will feature a panel on the efforts to create a mural reflecting on the incarceration of Japanese-Americans in San José and the South Bay at SJSU's Uchida Hall.

The fourth session will offer a tour of the Asawa statue about the incarceration of Japanese-Americans 1/2 block from the Hammer, and then an opportunity to visit Uchida Hall and hear from SJSU's Archivist around the materials in the collections that recount the use of this building for this terrible action.

Presented in part by SJSU College of Humanities and Arts 2023-2024 AEPG (Artistic Excellence Programming Grants)
